Graduate Studies

Minimum GPA

The Graduate School sets a minimum grade point average (GPA) for all courses listed on the official degree program at 2.80.  If a student’s GPA falls below 3.0, a letter to the student and the major advisor will be sent and continuation in the program will be determined by the DGS and the graduate studies committee.

Transfer of Credits

Students may not transfer any credits that were earned prior to the baccalaureate degree award. Masters degree students are required to complete at least 60% of the coursework for their degree (excluding thesis credits) as registered University of Minnesota Graduate School students.
Students pursuing simultaneous Masters degrees at the University of Minnesota are allowed to share eight credits between the two degrees.  In other words, the official degree programs must not have more than eight credits in common.  This rule also applies to students who wish to transfer graduate credits from a Masters degree earned at another university.
There are no specific rules regarding the transfer of credits for doctoral students.  Ultimately, the number of courses and credits that can be transferred to complete a Masters or doctoral degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis for each student, and must be approved by the student's advisor and the DGS.
