Handbook: Typical Yearly Academic Work and Associated Forms: PhD

Upon arrival

  • Meet with your adviser.
  • If you were not able to attend orientation, meet with the graduate studies assistant (105 Green Hall).
  • Go to your departmental office to obtain mailbox, office, keys, employment forms, and graduate assistant information.
  • Register for classes.

1st year

  • Identify your dissertation topic.
  • Form your prelim exam committee.

2nd year

3rd year

  • Schedule oral prelim exam with the Graduate School, 316 Johnston.
    • Oral Examination Report form is sent to the adviser prior to the oral exam.
  • Complete oral prelim and submit Oral Examination Report form.
  • Submit Thesis Proposal form (.pdf).
  • Work on thesis and related research.

4th year and onward

  • Petition (.pdf) any changes to the Degree Program.
  • Request a graduation packet from Graduate School. Packet contains:
    • Reviewers Report Ph.D. or Ed.D. Project Form
    • Examination Scheduling Doctoral Final Oral
    • Application for Degree
    • Graduation Instructions
    • Commencement Checklist
    • Commencement Attendance Approval Form
    • Doctoral Dissertation Preparation Instructions
    • Microfilm Agreement
    • Survey of Earned Doctorates
  • Complete thesis and related research.
  • Write thesis and papers for publication.
  • Submit Thesis Reviewer Report form to 316 Johnston Hall.
  • Schedule final oral examination (.pdf) with your committee and the Graduate School.
  • Take final oral exam. (The Final Oral Exam Report form will be sent to the committee chair prior to the final exam.)
  • Submit the Final Oral Examination Report form, dissertation and all other necessary materials to 316 Johnston Hall.
  • Submit a copy of the original Final Exam form to the NRSM Program Office in 105 Green Hall.
  • Meet with the DGS or Graduate Studies assistant for an exit interview.
